First let's open a full body with head doll base, We want to see how big or small we need to draw our little dog here. This is the reason we need a doll base to keep the perspective proportion. Well after you can always dress it up and have it play with the little dog.

Ok, let's begin.
With the paint brush and the setting below.
Setting of the Paint Brush:
Shape; Square shape
Size; 1
Transparency; 0
Soft Edge; 0
Line; Straight line

If you need the eraser same setting as above.

Draw your out line in mode with a black color. To draw my outline I zoom in at 800 pixels, I want to see the line in details, since I'm working with pixels. You could zoom in higher or less depending how comfortable you are for viewing your work.

Here is what my drawing look like at a 800 pixels zoom in. Now click out of mode and save your work as a ufo.
Now with the paint brush we are going to start painting the darkest part of it, which are the shadows. Click the painting mode to get a separate layer for your painting.

Look on the example on the left, this is what I did figure out for my shadows. We could always go back to it later and modify this.

Click out of mode and save as in ufo.

Ok now choose your paint brush again, click on mode before we forget, and change your color to a medium tone. And start painting again.

Here I have figure that the body part would be all colored up and no white paint just a bit of white in the paws and the face.

Then I did when on with a lighter color same tone and painted where the sun light would reflect more on the body. As you could see for the face I did choose a more brighter tone.

Have a look at the example on the left to give you an idea.

Ok, here I did paint in mode very light colors that would be the shadows of my white part of the dog.

At one point, it did seams kind of weird to me, and there was something about the color chosen, so I went and zoom out to see what was wrong with it.

Well, that was it, I was right, the color was way to pinkie for it to be use as a white shadow.

What I did to correct this is very simple. I did use the magic wand from the selection tool with this setting
Area; selected
Similarity; 0
Search connect Pixel; check

Did choose one color at a time and did click on all the same color  once done I did use the fill bucket to fill with the new color I did choose. And the same for the other odd color I had too. Since I did paint in mode, I had to paint the white part as well in mode since the white we are seeing is the background. You may want to change your background for painting it.

Or you could, unselect your objects, then with the magic wand same setting as mention above, click on the white area where you need it to be the paint part of the dog, once done, convert to an object.

Select all your paint part of the dog and merge as a single object, copy and past as a new image and hide the background save as a transparent gif. Make sure in your saving option panel the none is select for the soft.

As you could see, this could be apply to different animals, event a duck ha ha ha ha.  This tut gives you a pretty good idea on how to go about it.
Ok, here is what I did with it. Well what do know, the next door neighbour's boy is going to bring Doggie for walk. Hum!! I wonder if it is the other way around, Doggie bringing him for a ride, since the boy had put on his roller skate. he he he.

Hope you did enjoy the tutorial, don't forget to post your result in the Pixels Art Workshop at PhotoImpact International Board. You must be a register member and the good news it is free.
