In this tutorial, I'm not showing you how to sketch or draw a hand in proportion, I'm only showing you how I do apply paint on my sketch. I strongly recommend that you have a look at: http://www.wetcanvas.com/ArtSchool/Portraiture/StillLifePortraits/index.html

For this tutorial here, you could view the lesson #8, it will tell you everything you need to know about hand proportion.

Ok, lets begin, to draw my sketch, I did use the paintbrush, preset: Calligraphy.

Size about 2, my pen tablet set on both size and transparency, now if you work with a mouse, in your panel brush under option set it to both size and transparency.

Don't forget to paint in mode, very important for this tip. When you need to erase or you find that the line is to dark,  without leaving the mode, click on the eraser next to it, you could set up the transparency on how much you want the line to fade away, this is very useful with any color paint you are using, once you are done just click out of the eraser but be sure you are still in mode.

As you could see, my lines are not perfect, don't need to be, it is just a sketch to guide me. I did try to put as many details I could, all the major deep line.

Save as often as you could in .ufo format, ex: hand001, hand002 for the second save, you could always go back to a previous one if you run out of undos. Once your painting is all done you could always delete the previous one.

Now that you have save your sketch, lets add on some shadow. First you have to determined where the light source is coming from. Can't you guess where mine is coming from by looking at the example on the left? Yes you are right, at the top, far away and just glowing on some parts of my hand.

How did I get those line to look like a canvas, easy, first I did prepare a texture for it. I did use paper11 from Ulead, it should be in the paper folder or, material depending of the version. Open the file in PI and then resize it down to 50% and resave it with a new name. Now you just had to add this texture and the select it to paint with it.

The reason I use the texture, is that it leaves white area in it and will be useful later on to smudge and blend the paint together.

Don't forget to do this in mode.

To apply this shadow, I did use the Charcoal brush with the texture I did mention above.

As you all know, all human without any exceptions, are orange, lolllllll yes it different tone of shade but we are all orange. So for the shadow here, I did choose a dark orange, looks like a brown one. You'll have to play with your transparency about 65 maybe or so, depending if you use mouse or not and the pressure you do apply.

Try to put only the darkest shadow that you will have, not sure, take a look at your hand, with the same light sources, that will help you out.

Did you save before we move on?

With same setting, I just did change the color to between  middle orange and the dark one I had. Did add some more partly over the previous and to new places and extend the dark shadow a bit.

Don't worry if it goes outside a bit, with the eraser next to the mode without clicking out of mode, you could erase those.

Time to save again.

Ok, now for the next layer of paint, I did select no texture, choose the soft Charcoal preset, set my transparency around 78 and the size accordingly to your canvas and area you want to apply the paint. Choose a medium orange skin color.

In mode, I went over all my outline and on part of the shadow. Save again.

At this point here I did merge evrything onto my canvas, cause I want to blend some white with it, if not, you could paint some white in mode inside the hand and send that layer under and merge all layer as a single object, then you will have to click on the edit mode to use the retouch tool. Your choice up to you. Now, lets take the Smudge tool, you may have to play with different size as you work into your paint. As you work and smudge to blend the paint follow the natural lines, the curves carefully as you could see in the example at the left. Once satisfy save.

Since all the smudging and blend became a bit pale, I did apply more paint but a bit darker than the previous, bit not everywhere as you could see. Don't forget if you have choose the second option to keep on in mode that you would do this in mode, Since I did merge everything onto the canvas I don't need to make sure I do everything in mode anymore.

Time to save again.

Smudge again, but not to much, level is still at 30 here haven't change that.

Save again.

Now, we are going to paint in a medium light skin tone, always using the same setting with our charcoal brush. Fill in all the white area and just a tiny bit over the shadow color not much.

Time to save.

With the Smudge tool again, fallowing as before the curves and shape of the hand, smudge gently, never do a back and forth, always try to go in the direction of the line or curve.

Yep, time to save. :)

Here, we are going to apply a light skin tone color over the some part of the last color we did apply, this is where the light reflection shows the most.

Lets save that.

And yes, we do smudge those area again and we save.

This time, we need some place to be really, really light, we are going to use the Dodge tool, set the level about 10 or 12, depending of your color choice and if you work with a mouse or a pen.

As you could see on the left, it start to get more of  a 3 dimension look.

Save that again.

Here I wanted to have my skin to be more soft with the blending transition of the color. To achieve a soft look, I did use the Blur tool, keeping the level at 5, but did use different size depending on the area I was making soft.

You have to be careful here with the blur tool, not to go over your outline edge and the dark shadow between the fingers, those places have to stay more define.

The more you blur, the darker your painting gets, don't forget that.

Time to save.

Ok for the last part, since my hand was kind of pale, and that I wanted more dark, instead of using the burn tool, I just went under format, choose level, and play with the arrows at the bottom to make it a bit darker. And Voilą.

Now if you did keep on working in mode, it is great, cause you have a hand ready to be use in a painting of your choice, but if you did like me and merge everything onto you canvas, you will have to use the selection tool to have your hand as an object and when you use into a painting you will have to fix the edge and blend with your painting.

Lets move to the next page to see what happen to this hand.
