Part 1 Face

First Let's open a blank canvas 500 x500 pixels, it could be bigger or smaller depending on the size you would like to have your clown.

From the Custom tool I did chose number FR31 or b27. For this one on the left, I have flip vertically, for b27 you don't have too.

While it is still select and you are in drawing mode Click on the edit tool and shape your path to look about the one I have on the left. Once done click out of the edit tool and keep it selected.

Right click on your colour and choose Gradient Fill from the drop down window.

It should open a window like the next example on the left below. Click on the multicolor gradient window this will open a new window like the one on the left.

Choose a ring gradient that has 3 color square dots, we are going to change the colours.

One colour will be white.

Second colour will be a very light blue.

Third colour will be a liitle bit darker blue than the one we did choose for the second one.

Now, Where it is mark Ring(0...359): we are going to rotate our gradient ringg and position our white colour square on the right in the middle. Have a look at the example again. Once you have done that, you may click the add button at the bottom, this will save your ring gradient for further use. Click ok

Now we are back to our first window. Choose the same setting as mine on the left and click ok.
Looks great so far, you are doing good. Now to avoid our gradient to stay as it is when we will rotate, we need to converted our path shape into an object, (Note that once an object we cannot edit it anymore, it is no longer a pathshape). Keep it select.
Click on the transform tool, set it to 20 degree and rotate counterclockwise only once.

This is what you should have so far. Notice that our gradient did stay in place. Deselect.

Do save your work often as a ufo format. I may not repeat it during the tutorial.

Ok more fun, we are going to make the face feature. I chose a star from the custom shape. You could keep it like this or you may edit yours.
I decided to edit mine. Since I kind of wanted the star to be a part of the face like a makeup. Click on the edit tool an shape your path just about the example on the left, giving it a bit of a bend look. Once you're satisfied click out of edit ( toggle).
This is how it should look. Don't worry if it is not the same, of course you may use a different shape than a star. Click out of mode.

Now let's make the eyes, we just need to make one that we are going to duplicate, rotate and postion.

Here for starting to make my eye, I did use an oval shape. Click on edit tool.

Here is an example view in edit mode, it will give you idea on how to position your ankers and notchs.
This is what it look when out of edit tool.
Here I have duplicate, flip and rotate 20 degree.

Now we need eyebrows. For this one, I'm chosing number FI52 from the custom shape.

Click ok.

Draw the shape.

Keep it select.

From the drop down menun change your 2D mode to Continue Draw Mode.
This is what you have, click on the shape line on the bottom and hit the delete key.
Now this is what we have left.
Choose the 2D mode again and this is what you should have. Pretty cool hey, different ways to modified a pathshape.
OK, now let's bring our eyebrow to our face here. Now again you could leave it as is or modified the shape.
Well you've guess it right I decided to modified it with the edit tool. On the left, you will see an example on how I did position my notchs and ankers. If you find it is to hard to see, remember that you could zoom in, for small parts like this, I always zoom in, makes it easier and you could be more precise.
Ok toggle and you should have something like the image on the left.
I did duplicate and rotate 20 degree, I did modified the shape a bit with the edit tool. It is up to you if you want to modified the other eyebrow.
Cool, we are almost done for the face. Just need a mouth. I decide to use a heart shape from the custom pathshape.

While it is still select, I click on the edit tool. I wanted to give the heart shape a look more like a lips. This is a zoom in on the left to show you how I did mine.

Now toggle back in 2D mode, then choose Continue Draw.

Once you are in Continue Draw, draw a small oval shape in the middle.
Go back to 2D mode view. You should have something similar to the one on the left here.

While it is still select, click on the edit tool. Click on the canvas, and then click on the oval shape in the middle, this will select only the part you want to edit.

Shape it a bit like a smile, look at the example on the left, remember that we have a tilt head here. Toogle back to 2D mode once done.

There we are, we have completed our face. Doesn't he look cute so far, I bet yours is too.

Let's go to part two. Getting myself a coffee and I'll meet you there.

Part 2 Hat.
